Holland Energy Park
Holland Electrical Low Voltage Solutions
Focused on being socially, environmentally, and economically responsible, the new Holland Energy Park provides double the power generation capacity for the Holland Board of Public Works. Feyen Zylstra aided in making this vision a reality by installing the Building Management System which manipulates and monitors the HVAC controls for the facility.
Holland Energy Park provides a reliable power structure that will continue to serve over 28,000 business and residential properties in the Holland community. This natural gas-fueled facility reduces carbon emissions by 50%, virtually eliminating all solid particle pollutants from the plant.
One challenge Feyen Zylstra faced was that the project was set to be done primarily in rigid style conduit. As opposed to a typical screw together systems approach (EMT), this installation requires more critical thinking and is much more time intensive. Also, while this project seemed to be a fairly straightforward BAS installation, the installation and working process proved more complex. There were several spaces that needed to be maintained with negative pressure in relation to adjoining areas. Being a natural gas fed power plant, it was critical for space pressure control, in the case of a gas leak, to protect personnel-occupied spaces. With the south exterior wall being made of glass, extra climate control was also required in order to avoid a buildup of condensation on the windows. Furthermore, with over 300 people working on site with multiple shifts, our four man crew was working while also monitoring multiple parts of the facility, keeping a tight schedule, and maneuvering around other trade workers.
As is the case with many large scale projects, Feyen Zylstra grew in knowledge, confidence, and understanding throughout the duration of this project. We had the opportunity to work with a general contractor whose standard of safety was also held at the highest regard. While this created extra work in scheduling and coordination, we welcomed the chance at working with a customer that highly valued safety. Overall, we appreciated the many challenges this project posed.
