McLaren Hospital
Traverse City - Health Care Electrical System
For over 100 years, McLaren Health Care has been recognized as an industry leader and preferred health care provider within many Michigan and Ohio communities. Focused on providing their patients with quality outcomes, our team has served as their electrical solutions partner in the same way.
Recently, our team provided all of the electrical and low voltage systems for McLaren’s new 186,000 square foot hospital in Petoskey, MI. This included providing the power, lighting, and site lighting for the facility as well as the installation and commissioning of the fire alarm system, public access system, lightning protection, CATV, nurse call system, security system, intercom, and paging system. Our team also installed and connected all of the VFD drives, starters, and motors for all of the fire protection, plumbing, mechanical, and HVAC equipment.
Within the utility systems level of the six-story medical tower, our team installed a double-ended 12.47kV substation, fed from normal power, and an emergency substation which is fed from a site generator and paralleling gear. Our team also installed a second emergency substation in the penthouse level that feeds parts of the existing facility in addition to the mechanical and HVAC equipment. The rest of the stories contain 10 operating rooms, a decontamination and clean supply area, a morgue, 24 ICU patient rooms, 76 patient rooms, and administration and waiting areas throughout.
In order to add additional project value, our team utilized our Design Services team for Building Information Modeling (BIM) and prefabrication. Owing to the systematic nature of health care facilities, our team used BIM to coordinate the multiple infrastructure systems within the very limited space. With the project start delayed, our use of prefabrication allowed us to reduce rough in and installation times in order to catch up to the original schedule. Our team made use of our offsite prefabrication facility to manufacture all of the panel assemblies, underground stud ups, in-wall cabling, and conduit racks as well as the offsets and bends for the overhead branch and feeders on those racks. We also pre-spooled all of the home runs for the branch wiring and tailed all of the receptacles.
As a core value for both McLaren Health Care and Feyen Zylstra, safety remained top-priority on site over the course of the project.
