South Carolina Aquarium Sea Turtle Clinic
The Carolina Aquarium Sea Turtle Clinic’s main objective is to restore injured turtles with the eventual goal of reintroducing them into the wild. FZ was expected to provide the electrical work on their expansion.
This $5.3 million expansion will serve over 450,000 visitors a year, giving guests an inside look into the turtle’s rehabilitation process. The exhibit also features interactive and informative displays. Our team provided all of the electrical work for the renovation which included creating a specialized lighting concept to best simulate the turtle’s natural habitat. This involved a unique daylight-to-dark lighting scheme that helped mimic the ocean's light distribution.
Working in the Sea Turtle Clinic posed some rare challenges. Because of the nature of the project, special marine grade materials and PVC conduit were used to protect against the high saltwater moisture content in the air. As compared to traditional resources, these materials required more time and effort to install throughout the project. Also, when a hurricane hit South Carolina, our team stepped in and helped move turtles from the basement into water ‘pools’ on the job site. While it was not a normal part of the job, the team was extremely willing to help these beautiful creatures.
