With a growing skills gap emerging in America, the importance of mentorship, community engagement, and investment in the future workforce cannot be overstated. At the forefront of this initiative is the Charleston Electrical Contractors Association (CECA). For years, CECA has gathered together around one common goal; to better the electrical industry in and around Charleston, SC. They do this through training, education, and advocacy.
For over 10 years, Bryan Perkins, Senior Field Operations Manager at Feyen Zylstra, has been committed to CECA's mission, serving in numerous volunteer roles including Board Secretary and Vice President. Recently, he has been chosen to serve as the Board President. In his role, he will help advocate for the electrical industry by unifying contractors, addressing industry challenges, and creating a collaborative environment where knowledge and resources are shared. Bryan is supported by James Whorley, an FZ Project Manager, who will serve as CECA's Vice President.
“We’re not just building electrical systems; we’re building careers and futures,” Bryan says, "It took me 30 years to learn my craft and now it's time for me to give back to the next generation of electricians. That's a responsibility that I take very seriously and my role at CECA allows me to do just that."
One of the key challenges facing the electrical industry today is the skills gap. As experienced electricians retire, the need for skilled replacements becomes increasingly urgent. Having experienced the benefits and opportunities the trades offer firsthand, Bryan encouraged his son, Bryan Jr., pursue a career in the electrical trades instead of choosing the college route. FZ, Bryan, and CECA continue to tackle this challenge head-on by providing opportunities for aspiring electricians through training programs, apprenticeships, and scholarship opportunities.
