We sat down with Chris Liddell, an experienced Electrical Foreman on Feyen Zylstra’s (FZ) Grand Rapids team. With over 40 years in the electrical industry, Chris shared his career journey, insights, and experiences as an integral part of FZ’s success.
What has been your career path to become an Electrical Foreman? How long have you been working at FZ?
I've been in the electrical industry for over 40 years. My family was in the construction business, so growing up I saw the merit and benefits of working with your hands. When I turned 18, I was offered two positions; working for an excavating company or becoming an electrician at a local electrical contractor. I weighed both and decided that I couldn't see myself sitting in a piece of equipment all day, so the electrical trades it was.
I've worked for different companies over the years, mainly in the new construction field. Around eight years ago, I was working at a Food & Beverage Manufacturer as a temporary electrician and came in contact with the FZ team who was working on a project there. After working with them for one week, I asked their foreman where I could apply. The rest is history.
What was it about FZ that stood out?
Well, besides the culture, support, and team dynamic that I witnessed on that project, I also was drawn to FZ's size and the type of work they do. They are big enough to provide the resources, tools, systems, and support needed for success, but small enough where I feel known and valued as an individual. As far as the type of work, I enjoy a good challenge. FZ pursues and completes projects that are hard, and need expertise, problem-solving, and experience. I love that.
What is it about the electrical industry that you like?
Like I said, I love a good challenge. I love seeing a problem, having to collaborate, test, research, try, fail, and try again. There is such a sense of accomplishment when you're able to solve a problem, especially with your team. Overcoming those challenges makes projects so memorable for me. As an electrical foreman in construction, I nter the project site when it's just a pile of dirt and in the end, we all walk away from a new building that's ready to fulfill its purpose. That is just really cool.
What has been your favorite project you’ve worked on as an Electrical Foreman?
The Michigan State University Grand Rapids Research Center. It was one of the first projects I worked on after joining FZ. A great deal of the project had to be completed with the electrical exposed, which called for precision, accuracy, and craft. It was also very challenging in many different ways. It's one of those buildings that I love to drive past and remember all of the work that went into getting it done.
What would you say to someone who might want to join FZ?
Come! The team here is outstanding. They have your back and will give you anything you need to be successful.
Chris Liddell’s story showcases the rewarding opportunities available to skilled professionals in the electrical trades. As an Electrical Foreman, he exemplifies the expertise and dedication that define Feyen Zylstra’s team. If you’re ready to advance your career in the electrical industry, consider joining FZ, where challenging projects and supportive teams await!
