We interviewed Oliver Osorio, Service Technician in FZ's Charleston team, to better understand his experience working at FZ. Here's what he had to say!
How long have you been working at FZ? How did you get connected?
I've been at FZ for nearly six years. I had worked with a previous FZer at another company. One day, he called me up and sold me pretty hard on FZ. I was hesitant because what he was saying about FZ seemed too good to be true. Turns out, he was right.
What has been your career path?
After High School, I tried out different career options and considered going to college. Nothing seemed to sit well with me, so I decided to try out the electrical industry. I liked it and decided to make a career out of it!
I worked as a Service Technician before coming to FZ. I was hired on as a general electrician and worked with different teams on different projects before joining the service group. I've always been open to going wherever FZ has needed me. Being a team player and being open to learn have helped me as I've moved around in my career.
What do you like about your job?
I love being out and about. I don't have to sit behind a desk all day, instead I get to meet new customers and work on different projects every day. I love the variety. I also love working directly with end user customers and getting to build relationships with them over time. There's something very fulfilling about doing good work for a customer and then being called back to work for them again. Knowing that they want to work with you because of the trust you've built and the quality of work you've done is really rewarding.
There are always good and bad days, good and bad customers. I try to view the more challenging customers and projects as an opportunity to learn.
What do you like about FZ?
I like the fact that I'm a valued part of a team. I'm treated like an actual person, not just a number. People actually care about me, FZ actually cares about me. That speaks volumes.
Are there any specific benefits you enjoy?
Oh absolutely. The biggest 'sell' that FZ has is by far the health insurance. It's what made me join FZ to begin with. When I was recruited, my friend told me about the insurance and I didn't believe him. I thought I had misheard him. Turns out, he was right. It's the best.
What do you dislike about FZ?
Like any company, there's always room for improvement. Sometimes communication from the top-down is messy and expectations are blurred. It's definitely getting better.
What is the best piece of advice you could give to future electrical apprentices?
Go for it! Sign up for the apprenticeship program and give it everything you can. It can turn into a really solid career.
Anything else to add?
My experience has been great overall. FZ has treated me with respect and has given me a chance to advance. I would encourage my children to pursue a career in the electrical industry and work at FZ.
